About GST calculation

GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a tax added to the price of most goods and services sold in India. If you run a shop, sell products online, or just want to check a bill, working out GST by hand can be confusing and easy to get wrong. This calculator does the maths for you in one click.

There are two ways to use this tool. If you have a price that does not include GST yet, choose "Add GST" — enter the amount and pick the GST rate, and the calculator will show you the tax amount and the final price including tax. If you already have a total price that includes GST and you want to know how much of it is tax, choose "Remove GST" instead. This is useful when you receive a bill and want to see the base price before tax.

GST in India is charged at different rates depending on what is being sold — common rates are 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Everyday items like packaged food may fall under a lower slab, while things like electronics or luxury goods are often taxed at the higher 28% rate. This calculator lets you pick any of these common rates with one tap, or enter a custom rate if needed.

For sales within the same state, GST is split equally into two parts: CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). So an 18% GST rate actually means 9% goes to the central government and 9% goes to the state government. This calculator shows both parts separately, so you can see exactly how the tax is divided — useful for shop owners filling out invoices or anyone who wants to understand their bill better.

This tool is free to use, works instantly, and does not save or share any of the numbers you enter. It is meant to give you a quick, accurate answer — for official tax filing or business accounting, always double-check with your accountant or the GST portal.

Frequently asked questions

How is GST calculated?
GST is calculated by multiplying the base amount by the applicable GST rate. For example, on ₹1,000 at 18% GST, the GST amount is ₹180, making the total ₹1,180.
What is the difference between CGST and SGST?
For intra-state transactions, GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For an 18% GST rate, that means 9% CGST and 9% SGST.
How do I remove GST from an amount that already includes it?
Divide the total amount by (1 + GST rate/100) to get the base amount, then subtract that from the total to find the GST portion. This calculator does that automatically in "Remove GST" mode.
